Universal Rituals

Wishing rituals show up in virtually every culture ever documented, which tells us this isn't a quirk of one tradition but something built into being human. Your birthday candles connect you to thousands of years of people doing structurally the same thing.

Ritual Under Uncertainty

Bronisław Malinowski found that Trobriand fishermen performed elaborate ritual before dangerous deep-sea voyages and almost none before safe lagoon fishing. Ritual intensifies exactly where risk is highest. The impulse to wish gets stronger precisely when you need it most, and that instinct is ancient.

Liminality

Victor Turner's word for threshold: the in-between state where you've left one thing and haven't yet arrived at the next. Cultures worldwide place their wishing at exactly these moments, New Year's, birthdays, weddings, dawn, dusk. If you want a doorway into change, stand in an actual doorway.

Collective Effervescence

Émile Durkheim's name for the charge that builds when a group gathers around shared purpose. It's why a stadium feels different from your couch, and why a Wish Circle isn't just moral support. The group state is a real state, and it produces something no one person in the room could generate alone.

Dunbar's Number

Robin Dunbar found real cognitive ceilings on how many relationships a person can sustain, with the closest bonds clustering in far smaller groups. This is why a circle of three to twelve does something a crowd cannot.

Memetics

The science of how ideas, rituals, and behaviors spread within and between cultures, which is how wishing operates at the level of whole populations rather than one person.

Goal Interdependence

When people perceive that your success helps them, they invest effort and share information. When they perceive competition, the opposite. This is why “Don't get your hopes up” from a friend usually says more about their stakes than your odds.

Emotional Contagion

Emotional states transfer between people below conscious awareness. The mood you carry into a room arrives before you say anything, and other people's moods arrive in you the same way. Who you wish around matters.

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

Robert K. Merton's finding that a false belief can produce the reality it describes. Expect rejection and you approach people defensively, which invites the exact response you predicted. Your expectations about the wish are part of the wish.

Minority Influence

Charlan Nemeth found that dissent improves the quality of group decisions even when the dissenter turns out to be wrong, because it forces genuine reconsideration. A beautifully skeptical friend sharpens a wish with real questions. A cynic just drains it. Knowing the difference matters.

Reactance

When people perceive a threat to their freedom, they push back, even against things they'd otherwise want. This is why a wish has to be chosen rather than assigned, including when you're the one assigning it to yourself.

Three Degrees of Influence

Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler found that behaviors and emotional states spread through social networks out to roughly three degrees of separation. Your wish touches people you have never met.

Tipping Points

Systems flip once a threshold adopts, often far short of a majority. You never needed everyone to agree with you, only enough people, well placed.

Social Movements

Research on social change shows that movements start with shared stories, not strategy documents. People coordinate around a picture of the future before they coordinate around a plan. Every major change began as a group of people wishing out loud together.

Social Contagion

The rapid, widespread adoption of ideas, emotions, or behaviors, including hope and group wishing, across networks, societies, and digital platforms.

The Reticular Activating System

Your subconscious takes in around 11 million pieces of information per second. Your conscious mind processes about 50. The RAS is the filter that decides what gets through, based on what you've told it matters. Once you name a wish clearly, you suddenly see red Jeeps everywhere. Your wish doesn't change the world, it changes what you're able to see in it.

Neuroplasticity

Your brain physically rewires based on what you repeatedly do and attend to. New connections form at any age, and repetition is what makes them permanent. This is why a practice beats a decision.

The Default Mode Network

When you stop concentrating, a different network activates, the one responsible for imagining the future, seeing yourself in it, and making unexpected connections. Constant urgency suppresses it. Marcus Raichle's research showed this background network rehearses possible futures as if they were already happening. Give it a destination.

Memory Reconsolidation

Memories aren't stored like files, they're partly rebuilt each time you recall them, which means they're briefly editable. This is why revisiting an old disappointment with new understanding can genuinely change its grip. The past isn't fixed the way it feels.

Dopamine and Reward Prediction

Dopamine isn't just the pleasure chemical, it's the learning signal. It marks behaviors as valuable and worth repeating. Celebrating progress isn't a nice extra at the end, it's the step that cements the learning into your neural architecture.

Mirror Neurons

Certain neurons fire both when you act and when you watch someone else act, which means watching is a diluted form of doing. Seeing someone else's wish come true does real work in your own brain.

Upward Gaze

Fred Previc found that looking up activates dopaminergic pathways linked to meditation, dreaming, and spiritual experience, the same pathways involved in religious awe across cultures. Your nervous system responds to looking up before your mind even forms a thought. This is why Cosmic Wishes asks you to look to the sky.

Locus of Control

Julian Rotter's work distinguished people who see outcomes as tied to their own actions from those who see them as tied to luck or fate. The healthiest position isn't total control, it's knowing precisely which parts are yours. Cosmic Wishing is the practice of expanding that first category and making peace with the second.

The Hierarchy of Needs

Abraham Maslow observed that people attend to safety and survival before reaching for meaning and contribution. Some of our deepest needs, being loved, feeling safe, mattering, resist being made into goals because they depend on other people and timing. Which puts them squarely in the territory of wishing.

The Divided Mind

Sigmund Freud mapped the mind as competing parts and Carl Jung's answer was integration rather than domination. Modern brain science agrees that different systems genuinely can pull against each other. This is the science underneath the Three Selves, and why a wish can stall while you consciously want it badly.

Self-Determination Theory

Edward Deci and Richard Ryan found that intrinsic motivation runs on three needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Meet all three and motivation generates itself rather than needing to be summoned.

Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation

Rewards and pressure produce compliance that stops the moment the reward does. Internal motivation sustains itself. Tim Kasser's research found that people focused on external markers report lower wellbeing than those pursuing growth and connection.

Wants vs. Needs

Storytellers know that a character's want and their need are rarely the same thing, and that the story is the distance between them. Luke wanted adventure and needed purpose. Your wish has a want on the surface and a need underneath, and the need is the one worth wishing for.

Approach vs. Avoidance

We're pulled by what we want and pushed by what we fear, and the two produce different results. Approach motivation expands your thinking; avoidance motivation contracts it into threat-scanning. Same wish, opposite outcomes, depending on which end you're holding.

Hope Theory

C. R. Snyder defined hope as two things: agency, meaning I can act, and pathways, meaning there's more than one route. Not a feeling, two structural conditions. A wish with only one acceptable path has lost half of what makes hope work.

Hope as Survival Advantage

Evolution doesn't keep expensive traits around for fun. The humans who could hold onto hope through scarcity kept searching, kept building, and left more descendants than the ones who despaired. Your capacity to wish is inherited equipment, not a character flaw.

Mental Simulation

The ability to run “what if” scenarios in your head let our ancestors test ideas without dying of them. Every wish is a what-if, which makes wishing a rehearsal system millions of years old. You're not escaping reality when you imagine a better one, you're using the tool that got us here.

Self-Efficacy

Albert Bandura found that belief in your own capability predicts persistence better than almost anything else. At group scale it becomes collective efficacy, the shared conviction that this is possible. A wish is how you say that belief out loud before the evidence arrives.

Growth Mindset

Carol Dweck's work turns on one word: yet. “I can't do this” and “I can't do this yet” are different sentences, and they reopen behavior that wasn't available a moment earlier.

Mental Contrasting

Gabrielle Oettingen found that pure positive fantasy actually saps the energy needed to pursue the thing. Graduates who daydreamed about the dream job applied to fewer roles and earned less. The correction is holding the wish and the real obstacles at the same time, which is the basis of her WOOP method.

Broaden and Build

Barbara Fredrickson showed that negative emotion narrows attention to the threat while positive emotion widens what you can perceive and consider, compounding over time into resilience. Wishing from grim obligation isn't just less pleasant, it's measurably less able to see options.

Gratitude Research

Robert Emmons found that gratitude practice measurably improves wellbeing, sleep, and resilience, and that it shifts attention toward what's working. When you're waiting on a wish, everything in you tracks what's missing. Gratitude rebalances a badly skewed data set.

Forgiveness

Frederic Luskin spent decades finding that forgiveness produces measurable improvements in physical health and relationship quality, for the forgiver. Resentment occupies capacity. Setting it down clears room for what you're asking to receive.

Meaning

Viktor Frankl found that people can endure almost anything if they can find meaning in it, and that they find it at different altitudes: survival, service, transcendence. Your WHY is not someone else's WHY, and it doesn't have to be.

Post-Traumatic Growth

Richard Tedeschi and Lawrence Calhoun found that many people emerge from upheaval with deeper relationships, clearer priorities, and greater personal strength. Growth isn't automatic and it doesn't excuse the difficulty. But the hard middle isn't only damage, it's where new capability forms.

Awe and Self-Transcendence

Dacher Keltner found that awe quiets self-focused rumination, expands the sense of available time, and shows up in measurable changes in the body. Looking up at the sky before you wish isn't decoration, it's a state change. Small self, big wish.

Learned Optimism

Martin Seligman found that optimists explain setbacks as temporary, specific, and changeable, while pessimists explain them as permanent, pervasive, and personal. This explanatory style isn't personality, it's a thinking pattern that can be retrained. How you explain a NO determines whether you'll wish again.

Implementation Intentions

Peter Gollwitzer found that specifying when and where you'll act, in an if-then form, dramatically improves follow-through compared with intention alone. This is the bridge between a wish and a result.

Resilience

The psychological capacity to recover quickly from adversity, setbacks, or No responses to wishes, supported by optimistic thinking, detachment, and meaning-making.

Flow State

A state of energized focus, full engagement, and joy in the process, experienced during creative wishing, ritual, or peak activity. When wishes incorporate genuine fun, they're more likely to generate flow, where effort feels effortless and time disappears. Making wishing enjoyable isn't frivolous, it's neurologically optimal.

Inattentional Blindness

Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris showed that people counting basketball passes will miss a person in a gorilla suit walking through the frame. We don't see what we're not looking for. Naming your wish is how you tell your attention what counts.

Predictive Processing

Your brain constantly predicts what happens next and filters reality through the prediction. It does not tolerate blanks. When you don't know how something will turn out, you don't stay neutral, you generate a version, and an anxious brain generates the worst case. If you don't supply the story, the vacuum will.

Cognitive Bias

Daniel Kahneman documented systematic error in human judgment under uncertainty. We overestimate unlikely success and underestimate how long things take. The wish and goal distinction is a live diagnostic: which parts of this are actually in my control?

Choice Overload

Sheena Iyengar's jam study found that offering shoppers twenty-four varieties drew a crowd but almost no purchases, while six varieties produced far more. Too many options paralyze. A wish scattered across five competing directions sends your brain the same confusing signal.

Need for Cognitive Closure

Arie Kruglanski found that under uncertainty people grab the first available answer and stop looking, and that the drive intensifies with stress and time pressure. Holding a wish open is a deliberate refusal to close early, which is uncomfortable and usually correct.

Choice Architecture

Cass Sunstein and Richard Thaler showed that how options are presented shapes what people choose, without removing anyone's freedom. Applied to a wish, the design of your environment does more work than the pep talk. If the new behavior takes more effort than the old one, enthusiasm won't hold it in place.

Expectation and Detection

Psychophysics studies how physical stimuli become perception, and it's found that expecting something lowers the threshold at which you can detect it. A faint signal you're anticipating registers; the same signal unanticipated doesn't. Expectation is literally a sensitivity adjustment.

Counterfactual Thinking

Imagining alternative scenarios, the “what if?” move, which is essential for creativity, regret, wishing, and the mental simulation of possible futures.

Synchronicity

Carl Jung's concept for meaningful coincidences, where internal intentions or emotions seem to align with external events, defying obvious explanation.

Transpersonal Experience

Experiences, states, or psychology beyond the individual self, including mystical insight, group resonance, and cosmic perspective.

The Expectation Effect

Improvement in outcomes triggered by positive belief or expectation rather than by any direct action of a treatment or ritual. The placebo effect is the best-documented evidence that belief alone produces measurable physical change, and its mirror, the nocebo effect, shows the same power running the other direction.

Parapsychology and Psi

The study of purported psychic phenomena such as telepathy, precognition, and collective consciousness. Controversial in mainstream science, and worth naming as controversial rather than quietly borrowing its credibility.

Collective Consciousness and Field Effects

A hypothesized emergent property where shared thought, emotion, or attention produces measurable social effects. This spans the well-documented, like memes and social movements, and the genuinely contested, like claims of global intention effects.

The Observer Effect

Measurement affects quantum systems, which is real physics and also the single most abused idea in the wishing world. It does not mean your attention reshapes your circumstances. It's included here because refusing to overclaim is exactly the credibility posture worth having about your own wishes.

Emergence

Complex systems produce results that can't be predicted by examining any single part, and each level of complexity brings genuinely new properties. Your life isn't the output of your thoughts alone; it emerges from a web of causes, choices, and timing. This makes reality more interesting than a vending machine, not less powerful.

Retrocausality

Huw Price argues that the physics is more time-symmetric than our intuitions assume, and that the arrow of time may be partly a feature of us rather than of nature. Speculative, and held loosely. It's here because a book about wishing should be honest about where the genuinely open questions are.

Quantum Consciousness

The controversial theory that consciousness arises from, or influences, quantum-level events. Unresolved, and presented as unresolved.

Polyvagal Theory

Stephen Porges showed that the nervous system has states, not moods: safe-and-social, fight-or-flight, and freeze. Only the first permits creativity and connection, and you cannot reason your way from the second into the first. Slow breathing, humming, a long exhale, these aren't relaxation extras, they're the setup.

Play and Intrinsic Motivation

Play triggers a neurochemical mix of dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin that produces energy without requiring willpower. Your subconscious is like a puppy: it won't come when scolded and will follow anything that looks fun. A wish that feels like a chore is a wish running on fumes.

Coherence and Breath

Slow, exhale-weighted breathing shifts autonomic state within about two minutes, and Rollin McCraty's work links heart rhythm coherence to clearer thinking and steadier emotion. This is the most skeptic-proof practice available. It needs no belief and no equipment.

The Relaxation Response

Herbert Benson documented a measurable physiological shift, lower heart rate, blood pressure, and stress hormones, produced by simple repeated focus. He deliberately stripped the religious language and kept the mechanism so it could enter hospitals.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

Jon Kabat-Zinn made contemplative practice legible to medicine, and Sara Lazar's imaging later showed associated structural brain changes in as little as eight weeks. The way you get a practice past resistance is to keep the mechanism and change the vocabulary.

Prosocial Group Dynamics

David Sloan Wilson's work suggests that groups which cooperate effectively outcompete groups of individually selfish members. Cooperation isn't a soft preference laid over human nature, it's part of how we got here. Collective wishing isn't something foreign, it's a return to the default.

Epigenetics

Biological processes that regulate gene expression through environment and experience, not by changing the DNA sequence but by switching genes on and off.

Morphic Resonance

Rupert Sheldrake's proposal that patterns of behavior are shaped by prior instances of the same pattern. Mainstream biology rejects it, and you aren't asked to accept it. It's included because the question it points at, whether groups share something beyond direct communication, is one most people have felt in a room and can't quite account for.

Integrated Information

Giulio Tononi proposes that consciousness relates to how much information a system integrates, not merely how much it holds. Whatever it eventually proves about minds, it's a useful lens: the question isn't how much you know, it's how well what you know is connected.

Group Intention Research

Dean Radin, Lynne McTaggart and others have run experiments on whether focused collective intention produces measurable effects. The results are contested and the field is not settled, and that's said plainly. What is not contested is that the people doing it together reliably become more aligned, more energized, and more willing to act.

Random Event Generators

Devices designed to produce random numbers, used in intention and psi research as one of the few ways to test collective intention under measurable conditions.

The Hero's Journey

Joseph Campbell found the same story structure in cultures that never made contact with each other, and recent research found that people who frame their own lives that way report greater meaning and resilience. In that structure, obstacles aren't evidence the wish is failing. They're the part where transformation happens.

Neural Coupling

Uri Hasson found that when someone tells a story well, listeners' brain patterns begin to synchronize with the speaker's, sometimes anticipating what's coming next. He describes it as people thinking together. Explaining your wish informs. Telling it as a story synchronizes.

Oxytocin and Trust

Paul Zak found that character-driven stories with a real emotional arc are associated with oxytocin release, which is linked to empathy, trust, and cooperative behavior. The facts of your wish and the story of your wish contain the same information. They produce different chemistry in the person hearing it.

Transportation Theory

Melanie Green and Timothy Brock found that when a reader or listener is absorbed into a story, their beliefs shift in ways that direct argument doesn't achieve. Being carried into a story lowers the resistance that facts run into.

Narrative and Empathy

Raymond Mar and Keith Oatley's research on fiction reading and theory of mind suggests that stories function as social simulation, letting us rehearse other people's inner lives. A story about a wish is practice for believing one. These last two categories aren't sciences, they're original frameworks from The Art & Science of Wishing. They're what the sciences above add up to, and what turns a wish into a Cosmic Wish.

Peaceful, Positive, Purposeful

The energetic conditions for effective wishing. Peaceful is calm, grounded, and trusting. Positive is optimistic, and specifically wishing FOR what you want rather than AGAINST what you don't. Purposeful is summoning support from others and from Cosmic Collaboration. Each P is held up by the sciences above: Peaceful by polyvagal theory, coherent breathing, and the relaxation response. Positive by broaden-and-build, gratitude research, and learned optimism. Purposeful by self-determination theory, meaning, and goal interdependence.

How wishes are answered

The framework for what comes back when you wish, and how to read it. This is where predictive processing, hope theory, resilience, complexity science, and Reverse Optimism do their work, because how you interpret a response determines whether you wish again.
